Prof. Lawal M. Marafa
Programme Director

“Sustainable tourism is an emerging and important field of research in geography, resource management and related disciplines. The academia is working towards a more sustainable future for the tourism industry in face of its expansion which has produced significant impacts on the environment and society as a whole. In practice, sustainable tourism promotes responsible planning and management of tourism by taking into consideration environmental, resource, social and sustainability issues.

The Department of Geography and Resource Management (GRMD) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is in the vanguard of addressing environmental and sustainability issues in Hong Kong and the region. The Master of Social Science in Sustainable Tourism (MSSST) is a distinctive postgraduate programme presented by GRMD since 2007 that has a strong focus on resource management issues, tourism policies and ecotourism practices in Hong Kong, in greater China and around the world. The programme adopts a natural resource-based perspective and incorporates resource management and environmental management principles.

We strive to inculcate into our graduates the understanding and the processes of implementing and managing sustainable tourism that will help the environment while promoting education, ethics and conservation of the resources that are key to the viability of tourism. We welcome you on board to learn more about sustainable tourism and experience a fruitful programme.”
